Dr. Shannon is an Associate Professor with the Department of Medicine, and a Canada Research Chair in Global Sexual Health at UBC. She also holds the position of Director of Gender and Sexual Health Initiative, a core program of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Shannon’s research focuses on sexual health and HIV/AIDS among sexual minority populations. She completed her PhD. in Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. Since then, Dr. Shannon continued to examine the social determinants of sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention and contribute to policy development.
Dr. Shannon received the CAHR-CANFAR Research Excellence Award in 2017 in recognition to her community-based HIV research. Her work continues to have an impact on public health policies and guidelines, including the 2012 WHO/United nation guidelines on HIV prevention, treatment and care among sex workers in low and middle income countries.
