Peter A. Newman is Professor, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, and affiliate of the Joint Centre for Bioethics. He has been recognized with the Early Researcher Award, Ministry of Research and Innovation, Ontario, RBC Chair in Applied Social Work Research, Canada Research Chair in Health and Social Justice, and as an Inaugural Fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research.

Prof. Newman’s research program addresses global health and human rights, with a focus on HIV prevention and sexual health among sexual and gender minorities and racialized populations. He currently leads an international, multisite RCT of a community-based eHealth intervention (#SafeHandsSafeHearts) to support LGBTQ+ and racialized communities in the COVID-19 pandemic; Project VOICES, a study of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among marginalized populations in North America; a SSHRC Partnership grant, MFARR (Mobilizing for a Research Revolution to Support LGBTIQ Inclusion); and an HIV preventive intervention trial with young gay men and transgender people in Thailand. Newman is co-founder of VOICES-Thailand research foundation, with extensive consulting experience with UN agencies.
